In mice that are deficient in endogolin, the blood vessels do not mature and there is a failure in vascular smooth muscle development. Another gene that causes HHT is activin receptor-like kinase 1 (ACVRL1) gene. The mice become ever more appropriate HHT models. The genetic background also appears to influence the phenotypes of homozy-gous endoglin null mice. Embryonic lethality occurs between 10–10.5 days in mice derived from 129/Ola embryonic stem (ES) cells bred into C57BL/6 ani-mals (1, 4) but is delayed to 11.5 days in mice of 129/SvJ ES origin (2).
